Mt. Airy residents donate money to a boy whose wheelchair was stolen.
The kids in the Fresh Start Program had never met Rasheed Johnson, an 11-year-old boy with Spina Bifida whose specially designed wheelchair was stolen from him in September. But that didn’t stop them from lending him a helping hand.
The kids helped raise money to buy Rasheed a new wheelchair. They were joined by Darby mayor Helen Thomas and a representative from the Philadelphia 76ers.
The group gathered outside of Rasheed’s Mt. Airy home. They chanted his name, presented him with gifts and gave him a check from the Fresh Grocer for $2600.
“We’re very, very sorry about your misfortune,” said Thomas to Rasheed. “But you know, your misfortune brought a lot of communities together.”
Local restaurants, businesses, and neighbors also donated an additional $500.
Because of the donations, Rasheed now has enough money for a new wheelchair and a ramp to his house.
“I would never imagine that people would do something like this,” said Rasheed’s mother, Stacy.
