A memorial fund has been established for the family of Captain Michael Goodwin, a Philadelphia firefighter killed in a blaze earlier this month.
“Firefighters are family and that bond is unbreakable," said Local 22 president Bill Ga ult.
The city's firefighters union announced the creation of the fund to help benefit the Goodwin family.
The 53-year-old veteran died April 6 in a roof collapse while battling a fire in a three-story building along Fabric Row in the city's Queen Village section.
Goodwin's death was tough on the South Philadelphia community he served. On the day before his funeral, Goodwin's son said his father died doing what he loved.
Ga ult says there are many difficult days ahead for the Goodwin family, both emotionally and financially.
“We vowed to Mike’s family, as we have to all families who have lost a loved one in the line of duty, that we will always stand by them and take care of them. This is the first formal step in that ongoing process,” said Ga ult.
Goodwin is survived by his wife, two grown children and three siblings.
