Collingswood, New Jersey is defined by a simple motto: “Building our future by restoring our past," according to town commissioner Joan Leonard.

That’s the attitude that turned a small community into one of the most vibrant places in the tri-state. Ultimately, it’s that belief helped the town gain national recognition. The American Planning Association (APA) selected Haddon Avenue, the town's downtown area as one of the 10 best streets in America.

Haddon Ave. includes numerous art galleries with work from both national and international artists and photographers.  Various restaurants feature everything from Japanese to Cuban cuisine. Finally, the theater scene includes the successful Collingswood Shakespeare Company.

This is all highlighted during the monthly Second Saturday festival which showcases work from local artists.

Even more impressive than the town’s successful businesses however, are the steps that it took to create them. According to Leonard, it was a long process that required a cooperative effort from the county government, civic groups, and volunteers largely made up of town residents.

The community wanted to restore the town’s downtown area, which was composed largely of empty storefronts during the '70s and '80s. The restoration led to the development of various local businesses, helping shape the businesses that exist today.

While the community is both surprised and thrilled by the recent honor, they're not complacent. After partnering with developers and buying the vacant Peter Lumber business site, the town is looking to establish the land as a residential, commercial, and parking area known as the Lumberyard.

Leonard attributes the town’s continuous success to a willing effort from both government and local residents to work together. With its respect for it’s past, Collingswood continues to build a bright future.
