nI am a big believer in Kiva.org. I discovered it almost a year ago in one of Nick Kristof's NYT's columns.

You can donate a minimum of $25 and choose the woman (from anywhere in the world) you want to give to.

Kiva.org
It is a great way to empower women to start their own businesses and become self sufficient.

The money allows her to run a business and then as she makes a profit, she pays it back.

nThere are soooo many charities. But I'd have to say PALS: Pet Adoption & Lifecare Society.

...who I fostered and of course gave me my two beloved boys...Max and Tuxie!

And of course, I'm passionate about supporting the Fraternal Order of Police Survivor's Fund

Clearly I support them and especially this time of year because there are so many strays and they are responsible for rescuing Mama cat...

When I was a little girl I would stay with my great-grandmother while my mom was at work. She was spunky, and spiritual, and always doing something.

But as the years went on, her eyes began to fail her and that's when she started playing audio tapes of her favorite book, the bible, throughout the house.

One of my favorite charities is Associated Services for the Blind. I just remember thinking without those tapes, what would she have done? I try to volunteer with them as much as I can!

Another favorite is Dress for Success. Being raised by a single mom, I know how hard it can be for women who are trying to make life better for themselves and their kids...

Telemundo
...and Dress for Success gives them the little boost they need that could make the difference!

They help people who have suffered due to weather disasters such as hurricanes, tornadoes, and floods.

They provide food, shelter, and other assistance. Since my lifelong main interest has been in the severe weather area...

...I think it's only fitting that I try to help those who have been hurt by weather.

nI am a big supporter of Bethanna.

www.Bethanna.org
It's a local organization that really advocates for, and helps children in need find love, support and stability with foster parents and adoptive parents.

nFor me, it's Camp Asthma Cadabra, the asthma camp that my husband and I founded in conjunction with the The American Lung Association over ten years ago.

It gives children with asthma a summer camping experience they would otherwise not be able to have. It is a wonderful place in the Poconos where kids go for four days in August and they are with other kids who have asthma and they can just be kids as well as learn how to take care of and control their disease.

My husband's first wife died of asthma.

And a year later, his son Max also died of asthma.

We started the camp to honor their memory.

I have two big favorites. Covenant House is the only local shelter for teenagers.
31/40
Covenant House does amazing work and without this place, a lot of kids would be on the street and never have a chance.
32/40
My other favorite is Operation Bedding.
33/40
It came to be after a Sunday morning phone call from Adam Conboy from Roxborough, who at the time was serving in Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
34/40
Adam requested some basic supplies which included pillows. He said "whatever you send, make sure it is in the amount of forty." He wanted to make sure his comrades had the same comforts. He laughed at his mom's response and said "get Operation Bedding going!"
35/40
That Friday Adam was killed. Without realizing it, Adam had inspired his own Memorial Fund.

The George Fund is one of my newer charities. It's a pediatric hospice.

Philabundance is big on my list too.

And a long-time favorite of mine is Laurel House which helps the victims of domestic violence and their children. They also do a lot of outreach to girls to educate and prevent dating violence.
