A rash of burglaries has neighbors on edge in the West Mount Airy neighborhood of Philadelphia. Police say thieves have broken into at least a dozen homes there and surrounding neighborhoods since September. NBC10's Rosemary Connors talks to burglary victims, and has important information on how you can protect your home.
At least a dozen houses have been burglarized in West Mount Airy since September. Some of the homes have been hit twice, according to residents who tell NBC10's Rosemary Connors they are scared.
“I think someone has it out for our neighborhood honestly,” said Megan Williams, West Mount Airy.
The most recent burglary happened on Mount Airy Avenue late Monday, when a thief pulled a copper gutter off of a home.
Police call the burglaries widespread and say nearby homes in East Mount Airy and Chestnut Hill have also been hit. Investigators tell NBC10 they do not believe the same group of burglars are responsible for all these crimes.
"I was mindful, the house was locked up tight,” said Mary Ann Case, burglary victim, who told NBC10 that thieves used a crowbar to pry open her front door.
“We’re all just a little unsettled. The police are probably doing everything that they can, we have a town watch, but these guys are really savvy,” said Case.
The thieves have made off with electronics and jewelry. Police say they are stepping up patrols and have added undercover cops to help scan the streets.
