Missing Boater Feared Dead

Nearly 36 hours after an area man went missing while docking his boat in the Delaware River, he remains missing but his kayak has been found.

Officials called off the search for Xiang He of Locust Avenue in Bensalem, Pa. late Wednesday. He, 38, was last seen on Tuesday around 11 p.m. at the boat ramp on River Road in the Torresdale Manor section of Bensalem where he kept his boat.

His wife reported him missing Wednesday morning.

"She was under the impression that because he's an adult, she had to wait 24 hours to report him missing," said Bensalem Police Sgt. Andrew Aninsman.

Aninsman said that after police released info about He's disappearance Wednesday that a man came forward and said he found an unmanned kayak in the water off Delanco, N.J. Authorities later identified the craft as He's.

He's vehicle was found at the boat dock on the Pennsylvania side of the river.

Boaters typically kayak the short distance from the dock to where their larger boats are moored. Police say they know He made it to the boat on Tuesday because they found supplies on board. Neighbors also say they saw him out on the boat.

According to investigators, at some point, He returned to his mooring, tied up his boat again and then vanished during the ride back to the dock.

Marine units from the New Jersey State Police Department, Philadelphia Police Department, Union Fire Company and Croydon Fire Company searched the river on Wednesday but found nothing.

"At this point, we have not recovered or found or have any information on where Mr. He might be," Aninsman said.

Aninsman said Thursday morning that authorities assume He died in the water.

Authorities hope to continue their search Thursday morning though that depends on the weather conditions.
