Children of Shooting Victim Speak Out

James Hollis, 81, is in critical condition after him and another man were caught in a crossfire during a shooting on Friday.

The children of an elderly man fighting for his life are speaking out.

James Hollis, 81, along with another man, were both struck during a shooting Friday night in the Mantua section of Philadelphia.

Hollis was walking home near 41st and Parrish when police say a man began shooting at a passing car. Both Hollis and a 69-year-old man riding a motorized scooter were caught in the crossfire. The 69-year-old was shot in the back and arm. The man told NBC 10 he is currently recovering after being released from the hospital.

Hollis however was shot in the head and remains in critical condition. Hollis’ family spoke to NBC 10 about how angry they are that no one has come forward with information that could lead to the arrest of the gunman.

“People try to say ‘oh it’s a close knit neighborhood and everybody looks out for everyone,” said James’ daughter Avida. “But when it comes to something like this you don’t want any retaliation against you so you keep your mouth shut.”

“The type of violence and the guns and all this nonsense, it’s just uncalled for, something’s got to happen,” said James’ son Matthew. “Maybe give them an island so they can just kill themselves.”

Hollis is affectionately known as “Shooby” in the West Philadelphia neighborhood where he’s lived for more than 40 years.

“He knows everyone in the neighborhood and he likes to get out here and talk with his friends,” said Matthew.

In spite of their anger, Matthew and Avida are hopeful their father will make it through.

“Everyone, please just send prayers,” said Avida.

“He is a fighter,” said Matthew. “He has a strong will.”
