Flames shot from a house this morning as firefighters battled not only fire but icy conditions to bring the blaze under control.
The fire broke out around 1:15 Friday morning along 70th Street and Kingsessing Avenue in Southwest Philadelphia.
The blaze apparently began in the basement of an abandoned home then spread through that home and into an adjacent property, according to Philadelphia firefighters.
The blaze took almost two hours to bring under control as firefighters battled not only flames but also problems caused by the bitter cold.
“Because of the cold winter conditions we had three fire hydrants that froze up so we had a little bit of a problem,” said Deputy Fire Chief Derrick Sawyer.
"We had to make sure that we wee judicious with our water supply."
Sawyer said PECO crews came out to shut off some power to make things easier on firefighters.

Around 3 a.m. the blaze was under control.
No one was hurt.
This wasn’t the only fire in Southwest Philadelphia overnight. A man suffered burns on 40 percent of his body after fire broke out around 12:30 a.m. on the second floor of a home on the 5600 block of Beaumont Street.
No exact cause was given for either blaze.
