Liquor Sale Privatization & Pension System Changes Top To-Do List for Pennsylvania GOP

Pennsylvania lawmakers are treading some familiar ground this week.

House Republican leaders plan to vote on a bill to phase out state wine and spirit stores -- the same proposal their chamber passed two years ago.

GOP senators are dusting off one of their top priorities from last session -- overhauling public pensions, and possibly addressing the state's pension debt.

But no timeline has been set for rolling out a proposal, according to Jennifer Kocher, spokeswoman for the Senate Republicans.

"We are still talking. A lot of members are meeting and discussing, looking at the best ways to address the issues here," she said. "Pensions are a top priority for this caucus. They have said that all along."

Liquor sale privatization and pension overhaul were top legislative priorities for Republicans last session, but support fizzled out.

Democrats, including Gov. Tom Wolf, remain opposed to selling off the state liquor system as well as cutting state and school pensions.
