Plunked into the History Books

A bruised and battered Chase Utley entered the Phillies history books Thursday.

Utley was hit by a pitch in the 10th inning by Dodgers pitcher Ramon Troncoso. The play put the Phillies in a position to tie the game as Ryan Howard came to the plate but it also put Utley in the record books.

Utley broke former Phils catcher Mike Lieberthal’s HBP record by getting smacked by his 89th pitch.

It took Lieberthal 1,174 games to get to hit 88 times -- it only took Utley 766 games to break that mark.

Utley’s latest bruise moved him into a tie for 98th place on the Major League all time HBP list. But he’s got a long way to go if he wants to beat modern-era-record-holder Craig Biggio,

Biggio put up a "Ruthian" 285 HBPs in his career, according to The 700 Level

There is also a connection, albeit confusing, between the newest member of top-100 HBP list and it’s leader, according to Plunk Everyone. Utley played with Aaron Rowand who was hit 53 times. Rowand played in Chicago with Carl Everett who was nailed 87 times and Everett played two seasons in Houston with current leader Biggio.

With the Phillies playing less-than-stellar baseball at the moment, maybe Utley’s steel skin can be a rallying point to turn the team around.
