Eagles WR Mike Wallace Reportedly Has Serious Ankle Injury

The Eagles' bleak situation at wide receiver took another hit on Sunday.

Already without Alshon Jeffery (shoulder) and Mack Hollins (groin), the Eagles are reportedly going to be without Mike Wallace for a long while.

Wallace, 32, was carted inside from the sideline after just seven snaps in Sunday's 27-21 loss to the Bucs in Tampa Bay. He was visibly upset after the injury; now we know why. It appears to be quite serious. Wallace was brought here to be an upgrade from Torrey Smith, but is now injured before registering a single catch.

Jeffery is getting closer to returning after offseason rotator cuff surgery and his return can't come soon enough. Because without Jeffery, Wallace and Hollins, the Eagles are left with a receiver group that won't instill any confidence.

While Nelson Agholor is a very good player, Kamar Aiken, Shelton Gibson and DeAndre Carter aren't the answer.

So what is?

There are a few high-profile names on the market, like Josh Gordon and Dez Bryant, but I'm not sure either would fit what the Eagles want in their locker room.

Markus Wheaton was here just a week ago, has experience and knows the offense, but the Eagles decided it was better to have Aiken.

There are a few guys the Eagles were interested in enough to work out, like Breshad Perriman. He has familiarity with personnel head Joe Douglas.

Or maybe a guy like Jeremy Maclin or Jordan Matthews could be signed. They know the basics of the offense, but it's not clear if either are healthy.

And the Eagles also have three receivers on their practice squad, most notably former third-round pick Braxton Miller. Could he help out? Maybe.

There are no easy answers, but the Eagles desperately need help at receiver. Heck, they needed it before Wallace went down. Now, they need it even more.

If there's a chance this injury is season-ending, it seems likely the Eagles will place Wallace on Injured Reserve, which won't end his season but will keep him out at least eight weeks. The Eagles already have Hollins and tight end Richard Rodgers on IR. Teams are allowed to bring back just two players from IR per season. But that's a problem for another day.

There seems to be hope that Carson Wentz will be returning to action sooner rather than later … but who the heck is he going to throw the ball to?
