Phillies Split Doubleheader With Marlins

Phightins pull within a half game of Atlanta

The Phillies offense came to life in the night cap of a day-night doubleheader against the Florida Marlins Monday.

After scoring just one late run in the first game, the Phillies pounded out seven runs in the second game.

In Game 1 Florida's Adalberto Mendez pitched one-hit ball for six scoreless innings in his major league debut before injuring himself. The Marlins went on to beat the Phillies 7-1.

The Phillies, who've been held to one hit three times already this season, finished with three overall.

Vance Worley (0-1) allowed two runs and six hits, striking out five in five innings in his first career start for Philadelphia. The right-hander was 10-7 in the minors this year, and pitched a scoreless inning in his only previous appearance with the Phillies.

A crowd of 45,518 was the largest this season and the 111th straight sellout at Citizens Bank Park. They had little to cheer about.

Mike Stanton and Chad Tracy homered and Dan Uggla drove in three runs for Florida. Marlins rookie Logan Morrison, hit in the face by a foul ball from teammate Emilio Bonifacio while in the on-deck circle Sunday, went 1 for 4 and scored a run.

Mendez struck out six, walked two and hit a batter. The 28-year-old righty was 5-5 with a 3.98 ERA between Double-A and Triple-A before getting called up after seven seasons in the minors. He had just 20 starts, including nine this year, in 350 career appearances.

In Game 2 Roy Oswalt gave up four runs on six hits over seven innings. Despite not being his best, Oswalt still took the W in the Phillies 7-4 win.

The three-time All-Star is 5-1 since joining the Phillies in a trade with Houston on July 29. Philadelphia is 7-1 in his starts.

The win pulled the Phils within a half game of the Braves. And put the Phightins up 1 1/2 games on San Francisco in the Wild Card hunt.

The same teams play Tuesday night as Joe Blanton takes the hill for the Phillies against Florida's Chris Volstad.
