Fashion seems to be looking westward. Tommy Hilfiger's sandy Chelsea show was populated with surfer girls and skate punks, while the Mulleavy sisters at Rodarte looked to the raunchy sunset strip. J.Crew's Tom Mora was also feeling the warmth of the Golden State, but elevated the boardwalk look with ladylike frills and polished silhouettes.

It was the sloppy/prissy juxtaposition that sold the season: a pretty floral-print pant in shiny sateen, for example, next to a paint-splattered cargo pant. We also dug the varsity references, like a stripey pullover in white terry cloth.

Prints will always be an important part of the J.Crew aesthetic, but Mora and creative director Jenna Lyons are too smart to omit clean, minimalist staples that reflect the current mood in high-fashion (currently trickling down to bargain brands like Zara and Mango).

Sleek A-line skirts, which cropped up on a number of spring '14 runways, made a few cameos at the J.Crew presentation. Our favorite: this full white number, which was paired with a simple black tee and statement-making bronze necklace.

As the brand expands, J.Crew continues to experiment with technical treatments and finishes, like this perforated white leather crop top, shown with a pair of crisp white bermuda shorts.

No doubt these hibiscus-printed board shorts, which were teamed with a blue stripe nautical top and coordinating crop jacket, will top many editors' wishlists next season.

We always see the J.Crew show as a chance to scope out some of the dresses we're likely to wear to weddings next summer. On our hit list: this colorful printed sundress featuring a full, gathered skirt and low neckline.

Beach-ready pieces, like a silky henley dress in bright orange, looked sidewalk-ready with the addition of color-blocked stilettos and opaque white sunnies.

Given the growing sportswear obsession, there's no moment like now for J.Crew to push a sassy graphic tee. Here, a printed "aloha" shirt adds laid-back 'tude to a fussy white lace skirt.

J.Crew's latest crop of colorful accessories were a special highlight of the spring collection. Here, an easy metal-closure clutch in colorful basket weave.
