NJ Couple Gets $248K in 50-Year-Old Beach House Dispute

A New Jersey couple whose beach house was destroyed by a storm 50 years ago is finally receiving payment for it.

A New Jersey couple whose beach house was destroyed by a storm 50 years ago is finally receiving payment for it.

A state judge has ruled the town of Avalon must pay Edward and Nancy Klumpp about $284,000 for the property they bought in the early `60s.

The town used the property in a beach repair project and hadn't had to pay for it until a state Supreme Court ruling in 2010. The Klumpps paid small yearly tax bills and claimed they were listed as the owners though they couldn't use the property.

The Klumpps had sought more than $5 million as compensation. The judge ruled they were entitled to what the property was worth when the town took it over, plus interest. Their attorney said an appeal is likely.
