What to Know

  • A naked wrong-way driver crashed on I-95 in Southwest Philadelphia following a multi-state chase, police say.
  • Kyle Merena has been charged with driving under the influence of a controlled substance.

A naked man accused of driving the wrong-way on Interstate 95 before crashing near Philadelphia International Airport following a two-state chase faces a slew of charges including DUI.

Kyle Merena was jailed in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, unable to post $250,000 Thursday after being arraigned on driving under the influence of drugs, reckless endangerment, resisting arrest and traffic violations, according to court records.

Delaware State Police first spotted the Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, man driving north in the southbound lanes of I-95 in Delaware Wednesday night around 7:15. The 29-year-old driver failed to stop when troopers tried to pull him over and the chase began, Delaware State Police said.

The driver pulled into the Delaware Service Plaza and onto the northbound lanes before crossing the grass median back into the southbound lanes, Delaware police said.

The driver then continued traveling the wrong way into Pennsylvania where Pennsylvania State Police took over the pursuit, police said.

Police in Pennsylvania laid out spike strips to help stop the car. Merena's car hit the strips and its tires were deflated, but the car only stopped when it crashed into a trooper's cruiser near the Philadelphia International Airport, Pennsylvania State Police said.

The state trooper in the vehicle that was struck was not injured.
