Is Marriage an Equal Right?

This weekend there will be a nationwide gathering of people with the same message: “marriage equality for all.”

Philadelphia will join dozens of cities across the county in a national day of action against Proposition 8.

Prop 8 is a California ballot proposition that passed on November 4th.  It overturned a Supreme Court decision that determined that denying same sex couples the right to marry was unconstitutional.

The legislation amended California’s constitution to strictly define marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

That means same-sex marriages will not be legal or recognized in the state.

Pennsylvania is another state that also defines marriage as between one man and one woman.

In Philadelphia, faith communities were among those protesting these discriminatory measures.

Representatives from the Metropolitan Community Church of Philadelphia, Independence Catholic Church, and Reformed Catholic Church are showing their support for gay rights.

MCC Pastor Reverend Jeffrey Jordan explained, “I believe that no one of good heart wants to cause another person to suffer injustice, or to deny rights to their community members and neighbors.  It is necessary that all people take time to discuss this issue so that we can come to a shared vision and do the right thing.”

The Philadelphia Rally against prop 8 will be held Saturday at Dilworth Plaza at City Hall, starting at 1:30pm.  Join the Impact is hosting the event.

The event will be held rain or shine.

Organizers are encouraging participants to use public transportation.
