Pa. Turnpike Reopens After Huge Traffic Mess

Drivers stuck between two crashes; afternoon rush a major mess.

UPDATE: The crashes were cleared off to the side and motorists began to get by the accidents after 4 p.m. Traffic remained heavy as the back up cleared.

Here is what happened earlier in the day.

Traffic's was a mess on the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike after a fiery crash between two tractor trailers. 

 A second accident occurred below the first incident.

Motorists were asked to avoid the area throughout the early afternoon.

One lane was opened up around 4 p.m. for drivers who'd been stuck for three hours to start squeezing by the accident scene.

In the first accident, two tractor trailers crashed. One was carrying lumber and caught fire. The crashed happened around 12:40 p.m. between Lansdale and Quakertown.

The driver of the lumber truck was injured and there was debris, mostly wood, all over the highway.

People who were already past the Lansdale exit when the tractor trailers crashed were stuck in their cars the entire afternoon.

A second, multi-vehicle accident happened around 3 p.m just before the Lansdale exit. It was cleared around 4:30 p.m.
