Del. Meals on Wheels Needs Volunteers

The program that brings meals to seniors desperately needs drivers

If Susan Saggione and Marilyn Toomey are even a little late, their clients worry that they may not get to eat that day.

That's how important their jobs are.

Saggione and Toomey two of the few volunteers for the โ€œMeals on Wheelsโ€ program in the Wilmington, Del. area -- a program that is in desperate need of volunteers.

โ€œIt just takes about an hour to an hour and a half of your time and I really feel that I get more from it than they do,โ€ said Saggione a volunteer with the program.

But volunteer numbers have been dwindling for quite some time and, to compound the situation, layoffs and budget cuts created a shortage, says Meals on Wheels director Erica Brown.

โ€œWeโ€™ve had some senior centers that have closed in the City of Wilmington who would provide drivers that would deliver meals in their general vicinity,โ€ said Brown.  โ€œSo when they close and that driver goes away then we have to pick up those meals as well.โ€

For more information on how to volunteer go to the Meals on Wheels website.

โ€œAnyone can do this! Volunteers could be retirees or teenagers with a driverโ€™s license,โ€ said Toomey.
