Some local high school students gave back to the community by giving a member of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard a gift she would never forget -- a car.
Sgt. Tarina Greene, a mother of five with another child on the way, was able to drive home from Swenson Arts and Technology High School Thursday with a refurbished 2000 Ford Winstar.
Seniors at the Philadelphia vocational high school spent their final spring semester salvaging two previously smashed minivans. The project combined “real-world” practice with a chance to help others.
The students performed all aspects of refurbishing as a hands-on learning experience.
State Farm Insurance had given the wrecks to these automotive students in January for the purpose of eventually creating one good-as-new car.
During a June 17 presentation, the Swenson students presented the finished car to Sgt. Green, a mechanic herself.
“They did an outstanding job, they did a very good job. They’ve come together and they put this whole vehicle together,” Sgt. Green commented.
