Philly Newspapers Shedding 40 Workers This Month

Twenty-one people are taking buyouts and 19 editorial workers will be laid off by March 31.

Philadelphia's two largest newspapers will lose 40 more newsroom staffers this month, prompting union leaders to blast management.

The local Newspaper Guild says 21 people are taking buyouts and 19 editorial workers will be laid off by March 31.

Meanwhile, workers at The Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia Daily News and Philly.com website await word on their next owner. Local powerbrokers hope to buy Philadelphia Media Network from New York hedge funds.

The guild issued a sharply worded memo Thursday that attacks Publisher Greg Osberg's leadership.

The memo accuses Osberg of censoring stories on the company's sale and faltering with the launch of a tablet computer, among other complaints.

Osberg didn't immediately return a message. Spokesman Mark Block defends the tablet launch and says the company won't debate leadership criticisms in public.
