Fire Breaks Out at Rittenhouse High-Rise

People in Center City were looking up Friday afternoon after what appeared to be a small fire broke out on the roof of a Rittenhouse Square apartment building.

The fire broke out sometime before 3 p.m. at the 26-story Rittenhouse Claridge Building at 18th and Walnut Streets.

Black smoke could be seen coming up from the roof of the building. Fire officials quickly got onto the scene to dose the flames and after a few minutes the fire appeared to be extinguished.

Luckily no one was hurt, according to officials.

There were traffic tie-ups all around the area as officials blocked local streets.

The ground floor of the Claridge includes businesses like TD Bank.

Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayres says the fire was caused by a discarded cigarette thrown on a pile of mulch.

Maven Communications' Sarah Casey caught some video of the smoke rising from the building while sirens blared in the background.
