A planned protest which could clog a predominantly Orthodox Jewish community in New Jersey with hundreds of cars is planned for today.

Rabbi Yisroel Schenkolewski -- a longtime political and community leader in Lakewood -- is calling on the parents of private school students to drive their children to classes on Wednesday and Thursday to protest Lakewood's decision to end a nearly $4 million courtesy busing program for an estimated 8,100 students in September.

"We understand the ramifications that this might have on the township and are therefore giving ample time for the town to mobilize their resources to prepare for the upcoming drill," wrote Schenkolewski in a letter.

Courtesy busing is provided as a convenience for students who live within 2-1/2 miles of their schools. The buses are still rolling.

State. Sen. Robert Singer tell the Asbury Park Press he hopes private school leaders will call off the protest because creating a traffic jam is never good for anybody.
