After 140 Years Dems Take Control of Montco

Democrats win majority of Commissioner seats for 1st time since the 1870s

The last time Democrats had control of Montgomery County Civil War hero Ulysses Grant was president of the United States.

The GOP’s 140-year rule of Montco is coming to an end after State Rep. Josh Shapiro and his running mate Whitemarsh Township Supervisor Leslie Richards won the County Commissioner race.

“We made some history tonight Montgomery County Democrats, didn’t we,” declared a celebratory Shapiro.

With all precincts reporting and nearly 330,000 votes casted, Shapiro had more than 27 percent of the votes and Leslie Richards had more than 26 percent.

Republican incumbent Bruce Castor edged out fellow GOP candidate Jenny Brown for the third seat on the board by less than 2000 votes.

This race was one of the most notable in the area and could foreshadow what’s to come in the swing county in the 2012 Presidential Election.

“We’re gonna to bring people together and we are going to tackle the really tough issues that face Montgomery County -- Democrats and Republicans together working for a better Montgomery County,” Shapiro said.
