3 Firefighters Hurt Saving Woman From Atlantic City Condo Fire

Three firefighters were hurt while battling a fire, where a woman was trapped inside an abandoned Atlantic City condominium complex on Thanksgiving, when the unit went up in flames.

Firefighters responded to the burning building near the intersection of Pacific and South Vermont avenues around 7 p.m. to find an unidentified woman with no pulse in an apartment, officials said.

Medics revived the victim, who likely lived in the condo illegally, then rushed her to the AtlanticCare Regional Medical Center, authorities said.

Atlantic City Fire Chief Dennis Brooks said that the woman was found lying on the floor of a smoke-filled third story and had to be revived with CPR.

Three firefighters suffered minor injuries battling the blaze. The woman has been hospitalized with burns.

"There's no electric in the building so they had to generate their own heat," said Brooks, who added the complex closed about 18 months ago.

"They probably lit a fire," he continued. "You fall asleep, you're intoxicated or under the influence of some substance, the next thing you know the place is on fire."

Smoke could be seen billowing from the roof of the property Thursday evening.  Officials soon sounded a second alarm to call more crews to the scene.

No one else was hurt the blaze and an investigation was underway, according to Brooks.
