Winterfest at Penn's Landing Opens With the Blue Cross River Rink

Winterfest and the Blue Cross River Rink at Penn's Landing opened Friday for its fourth season and will remain open until Mar. 5.

The "Frozen" characters joined skaters for the opening Friday Jodie Milkman, Vice President of Communications and Programming Delaware River Waterfront Corporation, informed NBC10. Milkman also said opening weekend will continue to be magical with Harry Potter characters joining skaters.

NBC10 will broadcast the tree lighting sponsored by PECO on Dec. 2.

"There will be skaters and Olympic skaters and Philadelphia Symmetry, a local skating club, and carolers and cookies and all kinds of really fun things. It's going to be a fantastic night and a huge tree lighting." Milkman said of the event.

She also added that there will be little fireworks after the tree lighting.

"Winterfest is so much more than just skating," Milkman explained. "You can come down and have hot chocolate or roasted chestnuts. You can sit by the fire pit. You can enjoy the magical winter forest that we've created down there. And, of course, as of Friday you can enjoy the splendor of this 45-foot tree."

Also in December, You can skate with Santa on Saturdays and Sundays Dec. 3 through Dec 18 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Winterfest will also host "12 Days of Christmas" movie nights from Dec. 14 through Dec. 25 at 7 p.m.

"Get out there and burn off that turkey and that extra helping of stuffing and pumpkin pie and come skate with your family," Milkman said.

"There is so much to do," Milkman added. A list of events at the River Rink throughout Winterfest can be found here.
