Caught on Cam: Supermarket Shooting Person of Interest

Philadelphia Police release surveillance video of a shooting that left a Good Samaritan dead, a store owner injured & a suspect in the hospital

Philadelphia Police released surveillance video Monday afternoon of a shooting that left a Good Samaritan dead and a grocery store owner in the hospital.

On Sunday police say an armed man who they identified as Edward Friedland, entered the La Familia Supermarket on the 3300 block of N 5th Street in what they believe was a robbery attempt.

Police say Friedland and the store owner, Antonio Monegro, exchanged gunfire resulting in both men being struck.

“The gunman then fled the store,” said police Capt. James Clark. “Both the gunman and the store owner, both of their guns were left on the scene.”

Investigators say Rafael Ramos del Valle, 26, was inside the store during the time of the shooting. Ramos del Valle picked up Monegro’s gun and chased after Friedland, according to police.

He was then shot and killed by another man on 5th Street and Sedgley Avenue, according to police.

“He was shot several times in the back,” said Captain Clark. “Then the male stood over the top of him and fired one more shot, striking him in the head.”

Friedland was later arrested at a local hospital where he continues to recover while under police custody. Monegro is being treated for a stomach wound but is expected to survive.

Police say Ramos de Valle’s killer is still on the loose.

Police are currently searching for a man spotted on store surveillance video.

The person of interest is a thin Hispanic male between the ages of 18 and 25. In the video he is wearing a blue baseball cap and white T-shirt. He is also spotted entering and leaving the store several times before the robbery takes place.

“It looks like he’s a customer but we believe that he’s an accomplice and or a lookout,” said Clark.
Police are offering a $20,000 reward to anyone with information leading to an arrest.

Ramos del Valle’s family says he had only been in Philadelphia for a year after moving to the city from Virginia to live with his sister.

“He didn’t deserve to die like that,” said his sister Yessenia Colon. “All he wanted to do was catch the robbers and he got shot. I just want some justice. Whoever knows about this please come forward because I need justice for my brother.”
