Lower Merion Suspends Teacher for Alleged Student Affair

A Lower Merion High School science teacher was suspended amidst accusations that he had a sexual affair with a female student.

Robert Schanne, 43, allegedly had a “dating relationship” with an 18-year-old student about five years ago, according to a letter that was sent home to parents.

Schanne voluntarily left the school after being approached by officials about the allegations last month, according to the Inquirer.

The 18-year-old student wasn’t identified.

Schanne had taught Advanced Placement Physics classes with courses in Mechanics & Electromagnetism. He was even one of 50 teachers nationally recognized with the Siemens Award for Advanced Placement by the College Board in 2009.

There is no plan for Schanne to return to L.M. this year, according to the school district.
