Police Name the Wrong Guy as ‘Escapee'

The man police said escaped their custody saw his mug shot on a flyer and went to police to say, "That's not me."

Philadelphia Police released a name and photo of a suspect they said escaped their custody outside Pennsylvania Hospital Thursday. The only problem is that they named the wrong guy.

"The male identified . . . is not wanted. The correct identity of the escaped prisoner is not available at this time,” police said in a press release.

The man police identified as their escaped suspect was 22-year-old Randall Stiles of West Philadelphia. But he wasn’t Randall Stiles.

A woman in Stiles’ neighborhood showed him a police sign with his photo on it and Stiles went to the 18th Police District on Friday to tell authorities that he wasn’t the guy, reports the Daily News.

Police tell NBC10 that the suspect, who they are not naming at this time, told the officers who arrested him that he was Stiles and he gave Stiles correct address and date of birth.

The suspect allegedly assaulted a police officer who had entered the house where he was. The suspect injured himself in the struggle and police took him to Pennsylvania Hospital, where he was treated and released into police custody. The man escaped outside of the hospital.

Police say they had not yet fingerprinted or photographed the man, and released the identity of Stiles as the escapee.

The unnamed suspect is still on the loose, authorities say.
