NBC10 was there for a heartwarming reunion between a Peace Corps volunteer and his parents just in time for Christmas.
Gregg McCambley first reached out to NBC10 to ask for help in surprising his mother Pat McCambley of Horsham, Pennsylvania. Gregg is a Peace Corps volunteer in Gambia, Africa where he works in irrigation, beekeeping, gardening and media workshops.
During his time in Africa, Gregg learned that his mother was diagnosed with cancer. While she successfully underwent chemotherapy, her battle against the disease has left her stuck inside her home. Knowing it would lift her spirits, Gregg decided to return to the U.S. a year earlier than expected to surprise his mother as well as his father Bill McCambley.
After arriving at Philly International Airport Saturday, Gregg knocked on his parents’ door in Horsham Sunday at noon. Bill opened the door and opened his mouth in complete shock. He then embraced his son as tears fell down his face.
“I saw my dad’s face and just went in for the hug,” Gregg said. “He started crying and it was just pure joy.”
Gregg then walked into the home and hugged his mother, who later admitted she was a bit overwhelmed by the surprise reunion.
“Oh my goodness,” she said. “It’s probably going to take me about an hour or so to realize he’s actually home.”
