Gunshots End Fundraiser for Del. Burn Victim

The organizer of a fundraiser for a Wilmington burn victim is demanding government action after gunfire abruptly ended the event in a city park.

Police say no one was hurt by the gunshots Sunday evening at Haynes Park. But organizer Cecilia Williams tells The News-Journal it makes no sense that people can't even raise money for a good cause without risking their lives.

The event was meant to raise money to help pay the medical bills of Williams' sister Francine Wallace. She and another woman were hurt in a June 16 house fire that claimed the life of 48-year-old Lamotte Scales.

City officials say the event organizers did not apply for a special event permit which would have allowed police to be present prior to the shooting.

Wilmington Mayor Dennis Williams tells WDEL radio he plans to introduce gun legislation in hope of getting more criminals off the streets. Some local residents say however that lawbreakers don't follow laws and the best solution is a return to old-fashioned values.

"Basics like family values, core values, trust, friendships and things of that nature," said Aaron Campbell, who lives near the park. "Also in our education system and in our homes. When you do that you strengthen the community."
