Fire Shuts Down New Jersey Family Diner

A fire struck a popular New Jersey family diner late Sunday night.

The fire was reported at the Crystal Lake Diner in Westmont, NJ shortly before 11 p.m. Fire crews arrived at the scene to find smoke coming out of the building, but could not locate the original source. Shortly after, fire appeared along the roofline of the diner. Fire crews were able to control the flames around 1 a.m. Monday morning.

No injuries have been reported from the incident.

Police say the fire started in the basement of the diner. The cause of the fire is still unknown. The Camden County Prosecutor’s Office is handling the investigation under standard procedure. The building partially collapsed during the incident, which is making the investigation more difficult.

A woman who has worked at the family-owned diner for 8 years, Tina Sylvester, says that she’s heartbroken.

“We all lost our family,” Sylvester says. “It’s a neighborhood place, we got a lot of regulars that come for years and years…all I know is this place.”
