Day After Collapse, BB&T Pavilion to Host Another Concert

Fans who planned on going to Camden, New Jersey, on Saturday night to see Vanilla Ice, Salt N Pepa, and Coolio perform their hits from the '90s, won't miss their chance.

Live Nation, which operates the Delaware Riverfront venue, said the scheduled "I Love the '90s" concert will go on despite a railing collapse Friday night that left 42 people injured, including one critically hurt.

"We were saddened that several dozen people, including Live Nation employees, sustained injuries resulting from a railing section collapse during the Snoop Dogg & Wiz Khalifa concert at Camden's BB&T Pavilion on Friday night," company spokesman Victor Trevino said in a statement. "Live Nation is closely following the recovery of the injured fans and employees as well as actively working with authorities and structural engineers to determine the cause of the collapse."

He added that the section of railing that failed suddenly in the middle of a Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa concert has been "secured."

Camden city officials spent most of the early morning hours inspecting the BB&T Pavilion following the collapse that occurred about 10:30 p.m. Videos posted to social media by concertgoers show a scary scene, as a rail just feet from the rappers snapped suddenly and bodies poured off a concrete ledge to an open area roughly six feet below.

The space into which fans fell separated a small stage -- where the performers stood -- and the front of the massive open lawn. The concrete area is normally a walkway separating the lawn and the venue's seats when concerts are held on the main stage.

A Camden spokesman said city inspectors gave the concert hall permission to hold both shows scheduled for the weekend after venue operators said they would install a temporary railing in the location of the collapse and add a buffer layer to keep fans from going near the area.

The Saturday show is set to begin at 6 p.m. and will also include musical acts Kid N Play, Color Me Badd and All-for-One.

Live Nation, which operates BB&T Pavilion (formerly known as the Susquehanna Center and the Tweeter Center) along the Camden waterfront of the Delaware River, could not immediately be reached about the status of the concert.

Salt N Pepa seemed to suggest, however, that the show would go on.

The collapse Friday night happened around 10:30 p.m.

Most of the injuries were broken bones and bumps and bruises, county spokesman Dan Keashen said. One person, who was not identified was critically injured and taken to Cooper Trauma Center.

The person who suffered the most serious injuries when a railing collapsed during a Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa concert in New Jersey has been released from a hospital. Camden County officials say the person suffered an upper body injury in Friday night's collapse at BB&T Pavilion in Camden.

Concertgoer Katie Colbridge said Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa had just gotten onto to a secondary stage at the popular outdoor venue when the large section of railing gave way. That stage was a few feet from the barrier that collapsed.

According to a witness, Snoop and Wiz were yelling for the crowd to "Stand up" when the collapse happened.

The railing separates the sloping lawn from a covered portion of the hall in the center of the venue. The lawn sits several feet above a concrete walkway. It appears the railing failed where the support poles met a support wall.

Several videos shared with NBC10 shows dozens of people tumbling on top of each other. Snoop and Wiz are ushered off the stage as security moved in to help the fans.

Colbridge said she saw three people being taken away by medics and about 20 people limping after falling off the lawn.

A Camden County Metro Police spokesman said 10 to 15 people here hurt, but that the number could rise. Five fans were taken to area hospitals for treatment. Their conditions were not immediately known.

There were reports of up to 42 people being taken to the hospital with minor injuries, but city officials said that number hasn't been confirmed.

Snoop Dogg tweeted Saturday that he was praying for his fans wished them "a quick recovery."

A triage area was set up next to the venue's parking lot with at least one person on a stretcher and several others on cots.

Caution tape was placed across a gap in railing, where the barrier collapsed during a Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa concert Friday night.

Colbridge said the concert, which was about halfway through, was abruptly stopped. In one video, an announcer could be heard asking people to remain calm and that the concert would start again soon. Concert organizers later canceled the rest of the show and cleared the pavilion.

NBC10 has reached out to representatives with Live Nation, the venue's management, for comment but hours after the incident has not heard back.

The BB&T Pavilion opened in 1995 as the Blockbuster-Sony Music Entertainment Center. The 25,000 seat venue remains largely unchanged since it was constructed. It has undergone several name changes, though, as sponsors have gone out of business or were acquired by other companies. Past names for the facility include the Tweeter Center and Susquehanna Bank Center.
