Delco Man Fights Off Attack After Answering Door

Man attacked after answering apartment complex door, cops say

A man who answered the door at his Delaware County apartment complex Wednesday night was able to fight off an attack from a knife-wielding man, Collingdale Police said.

It was the second straight night someone allegedly tried to get into an apartment complex on the 100 block of MacDade Boulevard in Collingdale, Pa.

George Umstead says he walked downstairs to answer a ring at the main door of his apartment complex when a masked man came at him with a 5-inch long knife.

The attacker tried to force Umstead into his apartment but the 49-year old fought back, according to Collingdale Police.

"He cut me a couple times, once in the arm," said Umstead. "He tried to get my throat."

Neighbors heard cries for help as cops arrived on the scene.

The night before, two men rang all the buzzers trying to get inside one of the apartments to speak with a woman.

Trusting his instincts, Umstead says he armed himself with a steak knife before he answered the door Wednesday night. The knife broke into two during the attack.

Umstead and his 13-year-old dog Taco had actually just moved into his apartment this month. He says he plans to be more cautious the next time someone’s at the door.

"Uh, welcome to the neighborhood. I don’t know. It’s scary."
