Experience the fear and hope of an American slave this Black History Month by actually walking in his shoes on Philadelphia’s own Underground Railroad.
The birthplace of the Underground Railroad, Philadelphia’s historic sites are ready to give tribute to the men and woman who walked and brought about the trail of freedom.
Teaching about our country’s past – the good and the bad – with “Freedom and Slavery in the Making of a New Nation,” the Independence National Historical Park in Old City hosts the video, live performance and guided tour debuts Saturday Feb. 5 from 10 a.m. to noon, and continues the following week on Feb. 19 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the President’s House, according to the National Park Service.

The event include a live show in which an actress plays the role of Oney Judge, a woman who escaped slavery at George Washington’s plantation, Mount Vernon and came to Philadelphia’s own President’s House, according to nps.gov.
The accompanying video will give the background and history of the newly opened President’s House at Independence National Historical Park. A park ranger will then give walking tours of the Underground Railroad.
