Traffic heading into Philadelphia on the Ben Franklin Bridge backed up into New Jersey midday Monday after a tractor-trailer overturned, dumping a load of onions all over the foot of the bridge and the ground below, where the bed of the trailer wound up on the other side of the barricade.
The wreck happened shortly before 11 a.m. on the westbound lanes of the bridge in Old City and blocked at least one lane as firefighters worked to free the truck driver. The driver was listed in stable condition.
Cars and trucks could be seen backed up across the span of the bridge as the Delaware River Port Authority warned drivers to expect delays.
The Ben Franklin Bridge later reopened early Monday evening after the crash scene was cleared.

This was the second time in a matter of hours that one of the main bridges connecting Philadelphia and South Jersey had traffic troubles. A tractor-trailer fire closed the Walt Whitman Bridge into New Jersey during the Monday morning commute.
