Source: Eagles RB Ryan Mathews Passes Physical, Will Be Released

The Eagles on Tuesday informed RB Ryan Mathews that he will be released, a source tells's Reuben Frank.

Mathews had offseason neck surgery and had to pass a physical before being released. Doug Pederson said in a press conference that Mathews is cleared and healthy but did not say what the plan was with the veteran back. The move would save the Eagles roughly $4 million in cap space.

Mathews signed with the Eagles during Chip Kelly's first season in 2015. Mathews had success with the team, averaging 4.6 yards per game and rushing for 14 touchdowns (including a career-high eight in 2016) in two seasons.

The issue with Mathews, as has been the case for most of his NFL career, was health. Mathews missed six games the last two seasons. During his seven-year career, he's played just 86 of a possible 112 regular-season games.

The Fresno State product was drafted in the first round (12th overall) by the San Diego Chargers in 2010. For his career, he's rushed for 5,261 yards and 37 touchdowns.
