Eagles Reportedly Signing Former AAF Quarterback Luis Perez

The Eagles are adding another arm and an even better story to their roster, reportedly signing former AAF quarterback Luis Perez.

Perez, 24, played for the Birmingham Iron of the short-lived Alliance of American Football and his next stop is in the NFL with the Eagles on a one-year deal, according to Sirius XM's Adam Caplan.

This is pretty cool.

Perez (6-foot-3, 222 pounds) played at Division II Texas A&M-Commerce in Texas after playing junior college ball in his home state of California.

His story also includes a near decision to become a professional bowler. And, oh yeah, did we mention he learned how to play quarterback by watching YouTube videos?

Sure, Joel Embiid said he learned how to shoot by searching YouTube for videos of random white guys shooting threes. But Perez might top him. He learned how to play quarterback from watching videos … and now he's back in the NFL.

After going undrafted last year, Perez was with the Rams last summer, but was cut and spent just a short time on their practice squad.

In the AAF, Perez didn't put up very good stats. He completed just 52.3 percent of his passes for 1,460 yards, 5 TDs and 6 INTs, but those stats shouldn't matter too much. If the Eagles saw enough in him, he's worth bringing in to see if he could be some sort of developmental player.

The Eagles are pretty set at the top of their quarterback depth chart. Carson Wentz is obviously the starter. After that, Nate Sudfeld is the No. 2. The Eagles used a second-round tender on Sudfeld, who will make just north of $3 million in 2019.

Head coach Doug Pederson said he wanted Sudfeld to compete for the backup quarterback job, but it's very hard to believe Perez will push him. It's more likely that they'll bring Perez in and see what he offers. No real risk. Perhaps they might keep him around as a third-stringer, either on the roster or more likely the practice squad, if he looks good.

For now, the Eagles have just three quarterbacks on their roster, but there's still a decent chance they draft one late or add another developmental player as an undrafted free agent.
