Flyers Must Fly Without Razor Ray

Emery needs surgery and won't be behind the mask again this season

Flyers goalie Ray Emery needs surgery to repair his right hip and will miss the rest of the season, the team confirmed Tuesday.

β€œ(Emery) is suffering from avascular necrosis and will have a bone graft done to alleviate his hip issues,” Flyers General Manager Paul Holmgren said.

The 27-year-old's surgery wasn’t yet scheduled as of Tuesday afternoon, said Holmgren.

The Flyers brought the controversial goalie back to the U.S. after he played a season in Russia. Emery hoped for NHL redemption with the Orange and Black after his on and off the ice issues overshadowed his skillful net minding that helped lead Ottawa to the 2007 Stanley Cup Finals.

His full redemption will now have to wait -- Razor Ray won’t be punching his ticket to the playoffs.

Emery went 16-11-1 with a 2.64 goals-against average and .905 save percentage in his first season with the Flyers. He also posted three shutouts.

Michael Leighton has started in Emery's place and will likely be Philadelphia's No. 1 goalie entering the playoffs.
