Philly Teachers Could Get 3 Percent Raises

Philadelphia teachers were set to vote Thursday night on a multi-year contract that would give them raises in the 3 percent range, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer.

The union and the district settled their differences over the weekend, but not many details have been made public, which has made some teachers a bit antsy.

Copies of the contract were to be handed out as union members entered the Liacouras Center before the vote.

Right now, a teacher starting out in the Philadelphia School District makes $42,755. Top pay is $84,882, according to the Inky.

The city has more than 161,000 students in district schools and another 33,000 in charter schools.

The contract covers 17,000 members of the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers. If they vote to accept the terms of the new contact, then next week a vote would be taken by the School Reform Commission.
