More Than Ever Students Flock to Pa. State Schools

All-time enrollment estimate at state-owned universities

More students than ever were taking a shot at higher learning at Pennsylvania's state-owned universities.

Pa.'s 14 state-owned universities expected enrollment this year will reach or exceed a record-breaking 115,000 students.

The increase could be between two to three percent above last year's enrollment of 112,500 students. Gains were in new freshmen and transfer students, State System of Higher Education officials said.

At least 13 campuses expected gains, according to State System spokesman Kenn Marshall. Only Cheyney University didn't record a gain because an enrollment estimate was not yet available for the school, he said.

The state system schools are Bloomsburg, California, Cheyney, Clarion, East Stroudsburg, Edinboro, Indiana, Kutztown, Lock Haven, Mansfield, Millersville, Shippensburg, Slippery Rock and West Chester universities.

It wasn't immediately clear why enrollment went up this year.
