Miss. Lawmaker Denies Endorsing Killing of Gays

A Mississippi lawmaker has removed his Facebook account and clarified anti-gay statements he made on the social networking site. State Rep. Andy Gipson, who is also a Baptist minister, posted this original message on his page shortly after President Obama endorsed same-sex marriage: "Been a lot of press on Obama's opinion on 'homosexual marriage.' The only opinion that counts is God's: see Romans 1:26-28 and Leviticus 20:13." Those passages indicate that gay men should be punished with death. After lawmakers, the Huffington Post and other media outlets suggested he was advocating the killing of gays, he posted another Facebook message, doubling down on his original comments: "I do not, cannot, and will not apologize for the inspired truth of God's Word." Monday, he deleted his account and issued a statement insisting that he does not advocate for the killing of any people.
