Man in Dog Poop Controversy “Gratified” Over Mayor's Resignation

Mayor in affluent Southern California neighborhood tossed dog poop on neighbor's yard

The man at the center of a dog poop controversy that prompted the resignation of a mayor of a wealthy Southern California city said on Wednesday he was gratified and hoped the decision helps the city move forward.

San Marino Mayor Dennis Kneier resigned in the wake of an embarrassing episode on June 7 in which he admitted to discarding a bag of dog feces on the property of political opponent and neighbor, Philip Lao.

Lao and his wife issued a statement on Wednesday, saying "the incident that happened during the past two weeks catapulted us into the limelight.

"We did not seek it, it fell upon us," the statement said. "We would have preferred our quiet and peaceful lives in the community. However, when we became the target of intimidation, we felt we had to defend ourselves and speak up."

They said neither of them have political ambitions and hope the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of speaking up, without fear of intimidation or harassment.

Kneier said his actions were inconsiderate and disrespectful and he's stepping down because the event continues to be embarrassing to him and to the city.
