Wolverine Headed From Norway to Alaska Tries to Claw Out of Carrier at New Jersey Airport

Authorities said a wolverine tried to escape from its metal carrier at a New Jersey airport and had to be tranquilized.

Joe Pentangelo with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said officers were called to Terminal C at Newark Liberty International Airport on Tuesday afternoon. They were told a 40-pound male European wolverine had made a hole in its carrier, which was in a transport van.

The wolverine was traveling from Norway to Alaska.

A veterinarian from the Bronx Zoo in New York soon arrived to tranquilize the wolverine, so he could be safely moved to a secure carrier. The Bronx Zoo also provided a replacement transport container once he had been tranquilized.

An Alaska State Zoo representative traveling with the wolverine helped oversee the events.
