Surgical Center Warns Patients of HIV, Hepatitis Risk

A surgical center in central Pennsylvania is urging some of its patients to get tested for hepatitis and HIV after a review by state health officials.

The Department of Health review determined that White Rose Surgical Associates in York County needed to change two infection control procedures in order to comply with nationally recognized guidelines.

Dr. Daniel Henriksen is one of the Spring Garden Township center's surgeons. He says letters have gone out to about 1,100 patients instructing them about how to get testing at no cost to them or their insurers.

Henriksen said there were two areas of concern: possible contamination of a scope used to examine the lower gastrointestinal tract and certain vials of local anesthetic.

He said the center has already updated its procedures.
