A pilot died after a small plane crashed into a wooded area behind a Doylestown residential neighborhood on Tuesday morning.

The red prop plane – a single-engine Vans RV-6A – crashed behind homes on Charter Club Drive, a short distance from Doylestown Airport, around 10:30 a.m.

A pilot, who was the only person on board, was killed in the crash.

"I was sitting in my sunroom and I heard an explosion and I looked out and I could see a big poof of flames," Shannon Ogilvie, a neighbor, told NBC10.

Fire crews reported a fire following the crash and the left wing looks to have sustained fire damage.

"A few years back there was a crash but it was on 611," Annamarie Hughes, another neighbor, said. "It's by the small airport we have down the road here but I don't remember anything coming into the neighborhoods."

Officials have not yet revealed the pilot's identity. The FAA is currently investigating the crash.
