Teachers in the Scranton School District in northeastern Pennsylvania have gone on strike.
The Scranton Times-Tribune reports that the strike began as of 3:30 p.m. Friday, and students won't have class on Monday unless an agreement is reached over the weekend.
The Scranton Federation of Teachers says the teachers will picket to protest efforts to cut salaries and health care benefits, and increasing classroom sizes.
Officials said Friday night's high school football game will go on as scheduled and the union will let coaches cross the picket line.
The administration said the district was waiting to hear back on a proposal made last night that included health insurance concessions in exchange for step movement raises, but the union president said she was unaware of any official proposal.
