Sandy Construction Halted for Shore Season

Motorists in New Jersey will have an easier time going down the Shore this summer.

The state Transportation Department says Superstorm Sandy construction will be halted along most of Route 35 during the tourist season. Ten miles of the 12.5-mile construction zone will be completely open.

No work will be allowed in Bay Head and Mantoloking on Route 35 or side streets during the summer. Construction on side streets will continue in Seaside Heights, Seaside Park and Berkeley. At least one lane will be open in each direction in Toms River and Brick Township.

Utility crews, who don't work for the DOT, may be replacing poles.

The $265 million project involves rebuilding the highway from Bay Head to Berkeley after parts were heavily damaged by Sandy.
