Rural Pennsylvania Officer Laid to Rest After Fatal Crash

A police officer killed when his cruiser slammed into a turning vehicle will be laid to rest Friday.

Richard Champion, a part-time officer in Perryopolis for eight months, died Sunday after the cruiser caught fire on Route 51.

Visitation is scheduled from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at McCracken Funeral Home Inc. in Ligonier. A funeral service starts at 11 a.m. Friday at Holy Trinity Church in Ligonier, followed by burial at Snow Ball Hill Cemetery on Route 381 in Cook.

Gov. Tom Corbett has ordered flags at the state Capitol and state facilities in Fayette and Westmoreland counties to be flown at half-staff until sunset Friday.

The 35-year-old Champion leaves behind a wife and 16-month-old son.
