A man was shot and killed in West Philadelphia Thursday night.
Investigators initially said the shooting took place when a gunman fired into a crowd of people gathered for a pre-prom party near 55th and Pemberton streets in West Philadelphia around 8:45 p.m. Thursday.
The gunman fired as many as six shots, striking a 23-year-old man in the head. He died at the hospital overnight. His name was not released.

On Friday, police said the shooting wasn't connected to the earlier pre-prom party.
No other injuries were reported.
Investigators believe the shooter is in his late teens or in his young 20s.
