Philly International Airport Plans $5.2B Expansion

$5.2 billion expansion would lengthen two runways and add another

Officials at Philadelphia International Airport say a $5.2 billion expansion that would lengthen two of its four runways and add another could begin next summer.

Airport chief executive officer Mark Gale says the expansion will take 12 to 15 years and add capacity the airport needs to handle future traffic.

Gale says 20 million passengers are expected to board planes in Philadelphia by 2020. That's five million more than last year.

Under the plan, the airport would also build a new commuter terminal and a unified ground transportation center.

Gale says the expansion would be paid for by bonds, passenger-facility charges and FAA grants.

The FAA is planning to issue an environmental impact statement by late summer and final approval by the end of the year.
